أُسدل الستار على قصة ستيفن براينت، المجرم الذي هزّ الجنوب الشرقي الأمريكي بجرائمه البشعة عام 2004، بعد أكثر من عقدين على ارتكابها، إذ واجه مصيره المحتوم (الإعدام رمياً بالرصاص) في كارولاينا الجنوبية. وكان ستيفن براينت (44 عاماً) قد قتل 3 رجال خلال 5 أيام، وترك رسالة كتبها بدم ضحيّته الأخيرة في مسرح الجريمة قال فيها «امسكوني إنْ استطعتم».
وهي المرّة الـ43 التي ينفّذ فيها حكم الإعدام في الولايات المتحدة سنة 2025 التي شهدت أعلى نسبة من الإعدامات منذ 2012 (43 حالة).
وتنفّذ عقوب الإعدام في أغلبية الحالات بالحقن القاتلة. وشهدت الولايات المتحدة 35 حالة من هذا النوع في 2025.
ونُفّذت 5 حالات أخرى باستنشاق النيتروجين، وهو أسلوب استُخدم للمرّة الأولى في العالم في ولاية ألاباما بجنوب البلاد سنة 2024 شبّهه خبراء من الأمم المتحدة بصنف من صنوف «التعذيب»، في حين نُفّذ حكم الإعدام رمياً بالرصاص 3 مرّات في كارولاينا الجنوبية، وذلك للمرّة الأولى في الولايات المتحدة منذ 2010.
وأُلغيت عقوبة الإعدام في 23 من الولايات الأمريكية الـ50. وتعلّق ثلاث ولايات أخرى، هي كاليفورنيا وأوريغن وبنسيلفانيا، العمل بها بناء على قرار من السلطات المحلية.
The curtain has fallen on the story of Steven Bryant, the criminal who shook the southeastern United States with his horrific crimes in 2004, after more than two decades since they were committed, as he faced his inevitable fate (execution by firing squad) in South Carolina. Steven Bryant (44 years old) had killed 3 men over 5 days and left a message written in the blood of his last victim at the crime scene saying, “Catch me if you can.”
This is the 43rd execution carried out in the United States in 2025, which witnessed the highest number of executions since 2012 (43 cases).
In the majority of cases, the death penalty is carried out by lethal injection. The United States saw 35 cases of this kind in 2025.
Five other cases were executed by nitrogen inhalation, a method that was used for the first time in the world in Alabama in the southern part of the country in 2024, which UN experts likened to a form of “torture,” while execution by firing squad was carried out 3 times in South Carolina, marking the first time in the United States since 2010.
The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 U.S. states. Three other states, California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, have suspended its use based on decisions from local authorities.
